I personally love visiting California in winter for the mild temperatures. We went last January and it was absolutely perfect! The sun was out and we could explore California without having to bring along a winter coat. Plus, it’s the off season. That means both smaller crowds and cheaper prices, yes please!!

Northern California in Winter
1. Sequoia National Park in Winter

When considering places to visit in California in the winter, Sequoia National Park should definitely be at the top of the list. Sequoia in the Winter is a snowy wonderland, giving visitors the chance to reconnect with nature in such a beautiful setting. Whether you have a full week or just a winter weekend getaway, plan on coming to Sequoia National Park!
A trip to Sequoia National Park wouldn’t be complete without marveling at the Giant Sequoia Trees. General Sherman, Moro Rock, and Grant Grove are can’t-miss spots to enjoy on a journey through the park.
Get up close and personal with the wilderness on a winter hike through the park. Some trails may be closed depending on snow conditions. But lower elevation options like Congress Trail and Big Trees Trail will likely remain open.
Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular pastimes in Sequoia National Park during the winter. Visitors can join ranger-led snowshoe walks, typically running from December through March.
Many of the restaurants throughout the park are only open seasonally, so dining choices are limited during the winter. Montecito-Sequoia Lodge, located between both Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, offers delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes year-round.

2. Yosemite National Park in Winter

Winter can be an excellent time to visit Yosemite National Park. Most of its waterfalls are still flowing, its trails will see just a fraction of the crowds you’d expect in wintertime, and best of all, you might even get to see the Valley dusted with a coat of snow.
Yosemite is best explored on foot—and luckily, there’s dozens of hiking trails to explore! For example, head to the Mariposa Grove Trail to see the park’s largest grove of giant sequoias. They hold the impressive title of the most massive trees on the planet. The Mirror Lake Trail is another great option, leading you to a lake that is known for offering an almost perfect reflection of Half Dome.
If there happens to be snow on the ground, then it can be a great time to try your hand at snowshoeing. The park actually hosts guided snowshoeing hikes from the Bader Pass area every day!
For a truly unique event, time your visit with Firefall, an iconic event that takes place every year, where the position of the sun causes a reflection on the park’s Horsetail Falls—making it effectively look like there’s a waterfall of fire falling off a cliff! Firefall usually happens in mid-February and accommodations around the park usually book up well in advance of this event. So be sure to make your reservations early!
If you visit Mariposa Grove, then make a detour to the 1850 Restaurant and Brewery. They have elevated classics, like both burgers and sandwiches, and seriously good craft beer.

3. Napa Valley, California in Winter

This winter imagine yourself sipping a glass of red wine next to a cozy fire in wine country. Winter in Napa Valley is California’s best-kept secret. The winter months offer an escape from the hustle and bustle to a slower-paced Napa Valley and an intimate experience away from the summer crowds. Also, this is a great time of year if you want cheaper prices for accommodations.
The best thing to do in Napa Valley is to go on a wine tasting tour! A favorite of mine is Piazza Del Dotto Winery & Caves. I suggest their cave experience and barrel tasting, where you will enjoy a guided tour of their gorgeous marble wine caves and finish it off with yummy sourdough pizzas on their outdoor patio.
Napa’s mild winter climate is ideal for outdoor activities such as a scenic bike ride through the valley, the hiking trails at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, or kayaking the Napa River.
Napa Valley is also a foodies paradise with numerous Michelin-starred restaurants, like the highly acclaimed French Laundry, to fantastic farm-to-table restaurants that highlight the freshest ingredients in the area.
I recommend Brix Restaurant & Gardens for dinner. The restaurant sources many of its ingredients from its onsite garden. Make sure to reserve a table outside during sunset. Their outdoor space is magical. It overlooks their gardens and features gorgeous views of mountains and redwood trees.
Between the stunning scenery, endless wine and delicious food, Napa makes for a perfect Romantic Christmas getaway as well!

4. San Francisco, California in Winter

San Francisco is a great place to visit during the winter and it can be preferable over visiting in the summer. The weather is mild (not too hot, but compared to winter in the UK where I’m from, it’s definitely not too cold). Plus typically in winter, there is less fog compared to August.
There are a lot fewer tourists compared to the summer months too, so it’s a great time if you want to explore and experience the true culture without lots of people around.
There are so many great things to do in San Francisco. No matter what the weather, a couple of unmissable things to do in San Francisco are taking a trip to Alcatraz and visiting Fisherman’s Wharf to see the seals (adorable by the way!).
For a more wintery activity, you could see some Christmas lights (if you’re visiting during the Christmas period). They tend to have tree-lighting ceremonies this time of year too. Union Square is one of the best places to go to see them, but there are plenty of other places too. You may also find some holiday light tours in that area.
For places to eat, take a visit to Chinatown and just eat as much food as you can manage. It’s one of the best and most affordable places to eat in San Francisco.

5. Alabama Hills, California in Winter

Alabama Hills is an ideal outdoor winter destination in California. While Alabama Hills and the surrounding Sierra Mountains are much more packed during spring, summer, and fall, visitors during winter can take advantage of far fewer crowds at Alabama Hills. If planning to camp, then you will have a better chance at snagging an optimal, secluded spot in winter. Winter is also an ideal time to visit for moderate daytime temperatures, perfect for spending a day outdoors in the mild California sun.
The top 3 things to do at Alabama Hills are hike, camp, and tour the “Movie Road”. There are numerous trails to hike with unique formations, like the Mobius Arch, Nightmare Rock, and Shark Fin, with a constant backdrop of the towering, snow capped Sierras.

Camping is ideal in winter, with fewer crowds and better access to the best dispersed camping spots.
Visitors can also beat the crowds in winter as they take a self-guided tour of “Movie Road”, the main park road, and the filming location of dozens of iconic movies, like Iron Man, Gladiator, Tremors, Star Trek, How the West Was Won, and Lone Ranger!
The nearby town of Lone Pine has several great local eateries to fuel your explorations. My personal favorite are the burgers at The Mount Whitney Restaurant.
Closest Airport: The closest airport is the Eastern Sierra Regional Airport in Bishop, located approximately 60 miles north. Mammoth Yosemite Airport is larger, and is located approximately 90 miles north.
Average Temperature: Average daytime temperatures in Alabama Hills in winter (December – February) consistently stay between the lower and upper 50’s degrees Fahrenheit. Lows at night are colder, ranging between the mid 20’s to low 30’s degrees Fahrenheit.
Where to Stay: There are several options for accommodations in and near Alabama Hills. There are no developed campsites within Alabama Hills, but dispersed camping is allowed. You can also stay at nearby campgrounds only several miles away, like Lone Pine Campground, at the base of the Sierra Mountains. There are also several small hotels in the nearby town of Lone Pine, as well as vacation rentals.
Who it’s Good For: Alabama Hills is the perfect destination for outdoor adventurers, hikers, campers, and photographers!
6. Solvang, California in Winter

7. Death Valley National Park in Winter

One of the best places in California to visit in the heart of winter is none other than the hottest place on earth, Death Valley National Park. While summers in Death Valley bring deadly heat, winters bring moderate daytime temperatures that are perfect for hiking around the valley.
Winter mornings can be surprisingly cold, and daylight is limited, but afternoon highs average from 65 (18 C) in December to 82 (28 C) in March in this underrated national park. Popular winter activities in Death Valley include exploring the Mesquite Flats sand dunes, walking amongst the jagged salt rocks at the Devil’s Golf Course, and taking in the surreal colors at Artist’s Palette.
Death Valley also contains the lowest point in the western hemisphere at Badwater Basin, which is the most visited attraction in the park. Winter in Death Valley is for anyone who appreciates stunning nature but isn’t quite keen for super long hikes.
The nearest major airport is Las Vegas. Furnace Creek, the main visitor’s center for the park, is about a 2-hour drive from Vegas, making it easy to do as a day trip from the city. If you’re staying in the park, there are two large campgrounds as well as two hotels – The Inn at Death Valley and the Ranch at Death Valley – and The Last Kind Words Saloon restaurant at Furnace Creek.

8. Carmel-by-the-Sea, California in Winter

Carmel-by-the-Sea has held a special place in my heart for a decade. I began going when I was first dating my now husband. We have since visited Carmel to celebrate our marriage, with our dogs, a baby moon, and most recently, with our daughter. It’s an absolute fairy tale that comes to life with the ocean right in town. Even our dogs love it and their off-leash dog beach that overlooks Pebble Beach.
In their village, we love to enjoy the incredible wine-tasting rooms. Although there’s no snow, the town feels like a winter wonderland as you walk the cobblestone streets. For the holidays, they will hold their annual tree lighting ceremony on December 1st. Their boutiques are ideal for holiday shopping and if young ones are in tow, then keep an eye out for Santa.
There’s an array of delicious restaurants with my favorites being Dametra Cafe and Flaherty’s Seafood Grill and Oyster Bar. Everything is within walking distance from the Hofsas House Hotel. The only time we usually use our car is to drive the iconic 17-Mile Drive.
Carmel is also on the list of the absolute best places to spend a babymoon in California! So head here if you are expecting!!

9. Santa Barbara, California in Winter

I have both lived in and visited Santa Barbara as a tourist, and it is one of the best winter destinations in California. The city has a mild climate, which provides an idyllic escape from colder regions, and the absence of summer crowds will allow for a quieter, more intimate side of Santa Barbara.
Santa Barbara in December transforms to be filled with festive lights, snow and Santa meetings in Paseo Nuevo, and events such as the Annual Parade of Lights. There are also many opportunities for special dining and accommodation packages as well as NYE parties during the holidays.
One of the best things to do in Santa Barbara at any time of year is to explore the iconic Stearns Wharf before popping up into the Funk Zone. This pier offers breathtaking ocean views, dining, souvenir shopping, and the Sea Center, a little aquarium. The Funk Zone is an area full of the best breweries, wineries, and cocktail bars in the city.
Take advantage of the cool weather and go hiking in the Santa Ynez Mountains on trails such as Inspiration Point. Or, if you want to stay indoors, then visit the Santa Barbara Courthouse, Santa Barbara Mission, or one of the many great museums.
Santa Barbara has excellent restaurants, from quick bites to fine dining. Some of the best include Finch & Fork (American), Ca’Dario (Italian), Sama Sama Kitchen (Asian fusion), and Los Agaves (Mexican). Whether you are looking for a romantic winter destination, an escape from the snow, or simply a gorgeous city to visit, you will find Santa Barbara is one of the best vacation destinations!

10. Joshua Tree National Park in Winter

Joshua Tree is an amazing national park in California, and it is stellar to visit during the winter season. Desert temperatures are notoriously hot in the summer and cool in the winter.
Winter is an opportunity to enjoy Joshua Tree at mild temperatures. I recommend wearing a long sleeved or regular t-shirt with a zip up sweater for your visit. Cozy sweater weather is the best! Dress much warmer if you are planning to go camping overnight. But with highs in the 60s, its a great warm winter getaway!
There will not be snow during your visit to Joshua Tree so you can expect smooth road conditions. And no need to worry about the trails without shade. This can be challenging over the summer, but seamless in the winter!
My favorite activity at Joshua Tree is stargazing. Many travelers agree that it is one of the best places to stargaze in the United States. I think the most ideal and convenient place to go stargazing is the comfort of your campground.
Some of the best things to do at Joshua Tree are visit Cholla Cactus garden and gaze over the Coachella Valley at Keys View. There are many other exceptional hikes to choose throughout the park like Skull Rock and Split Rock.
Crossroads Cafe is one of the top rated restaurants to eat in the area.

11. San Diego, California in Winter

San Diego is one of the best places to visit in California in winter thanks to perfect sunny weather and plenty of outdoor opportunities like hiking, surfing and wildlife watching.
December through April is the primary season for seeing gray whales as they migrate south from the Arctic to the warmer waters off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. Gray whales are commonly spotted during this time, and many whale-watching tours focus on observing their migration.
In winter, which is the rainy season in Southern California, San Diego still receives about 60-70% of possible sunshine. While the city may experience some rainy days, it still generally enjoys a significant amount of clear and sunny weather during the winter.
The average temperature in San Diego in December typically ranges from around 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 18 degrees Celsius). However, temperatures can vary, as there could be some cooler days occasionally.
The primary airport serving San Diego is the San Diego International Airport (SAN). It is located about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) northwest of downtown San Diego.
If you plan to spend a couple of days in San Diego, then book your stay at Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego which boasts spectacular views of the ocean and proximity to many landmarks.

12. Buena Park, California in Winter

Located about 21 miles southeast of Los Angeles, Buena Park is a great family fun destination. The sunny weather and moderate temperatures make Buena Park an excellent place to visit in California in winter.
Visiting Knott’s Berry Farm, the home of the Boysenberry, is fun for the whole family any time of the year. But, in winter, it transforms into a unique holiday destination, Knott’s Merry Farm. Then, they have a nightly tree lighting ceremony, the jolly old elf himself, Santa, and an abundance of holiday décor.
While spending the day at Knott’s Berry Farm, visit their sit-down dining venue Ghost Town Grill. I recommend topping off your meal with a piece of Boysenberry pie and a scoop of Boysenberry ice cream. After all, the Boysenberry, a combination of loganberries, blackberries, and raspberries, was invented at Knott’s Berry Farm.
Closest Airport: Long Beach (LGB) is the closest airport at just over nine miles. Other nearby airport options include Santa Ana (SNA) (15.2 miles), Los Angeles (LAX) (24.3 miles), Burbank (BUR) (30.6 miles) and San Diego (SAN) (91.6 miles).
Average Temperature: The average winter temperatures range from a high of 69 degrees to a low of 47 degrees. Typically, you’ll have about four days of rain in any given winter month.
Where to Stay: I recommend staying at the DoubleTree by Hilton Buena Park. Located near the famous theme parks, the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland. The shuttle is great because you will avoid parking fees even if you have a car.
Who it’s good for: Buena Park is great for families, multi-generational trips, and couples.
