Walt Disney World
2 Hours and 15 Minutes, 155 Miles from Jacksonville
Alright, so you’ve heard of Disney World. But have you been in a while? If you live in Jacksonville then there’s a good chance you think of Disney as the tourist destination for people who don’t live just 2 hours away like you do. But think again and add this to your list of weekend getaways from Jacksonville, FL. It’s also a great babymoon in Florida destination, or daytrip from Tampa!
Disney is constantly changing and updating, so every time you visit there will be something new, or even several new elements! The four parks are always getting new rides, restaurants and shows. But also, the areas around the parks constantly have new and exciting things to experience. I mean, even the hotels are so much fun to explore! And no, it’s not just for families. Disney can be fun for people of ALL ages, you just have to find the things that you love most about it!
Be sure to grab a Florida resident annual pass so you can visit as often as you want. This way if you visit for a weekend, you won’t feel pressured to do and see everything. You can just come back next month! Not to mention, it’s also super reasonable and can be worth the price after just 3 days in some cases.
You’ll also get to try out lots of different dining options, as sometimes it can be hard to find the hidden gems. I promise, you don’t need chicken fingers and fries again! Instead try the $6 chicken fried rice at Yak & Yeti in Animal Kingdom, or Jack Jack’s Nom Nom Cookie at Hollywood Studios (Yes, it’s so worth the money and calories).
The Disney hotels are incredible. They are gorgeous and intricately designed, they have so many fun activities going on and they make transportation a breeze. But, let’s be honest, they can be super expensive!! Instead, save a little money and stay at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort. This is my all time favorite option because it is a little cheaper, but still beautiful with lots of activities and great service. But the best part? It’s located on Disney property so you can take the Disney bus line AND the boat to Epcot and Hollywood Studios. It’s so convenient and the perfect spot to stay for a night or two.

Savannah, GA
2 Hours and 3 Minutes, 139 Miles from Jacksonville
Savannah makes the ideal weekend getaway from Jacksonville for either a girls’ trip or for couples who are interested in cultural destinations. The Historic District is loaded with beautiful architectural details, stunning mansions, museums, and historic landmarks.
To get there, it’s pretty much a straight shot north via I-95 to the Savannah exit. The drive takes approximately 2 hours when traffic is light. Alternatively, you can find inexpensive flights from JAX to SAV, and you won’t need a car at all once you arrive in the Historic District.
A few of the best things to do in Savannah include a visit to one of the city’s incredible historic homes (the Owens Thomas House and Slave Quarters is a good one), a cemetery visit (there are three beautiful options, but Colonial Park Cemetery is located within the Historic District), and guided tour to learn more about the people who built the city (Underground Tours of Savannah is a good one).
The most popular place to eat is The Olde Pink House, but note that you’ll need to make reservations a couple months in advance. Have no fear, though; Savannah is a foodies city and loaded with some amazing restaurants you won’t find anywhere else. Common Thread was just voted one of the Top 50 New Restaurants in the U.S. by Bon Appétit, while The Grey is one of a handful of James Beard award-winning restaurants in the city.
The best place to stay is in the Historic District for its easy walkability to attractions. A few recommended hotels include The Marshall House and Perry Lane, while B&B fans can opt for the historic Eliza Thompson House or the Hamilton-Turner Inn.

Ginnie Springs, FL
1 Hour and 32 Minutes, 84 Miles from Jacksonville
Just an hour and half drive from Jacksonville, Ginnie Springs is the perfect day trip or quick weekend getaway. Often overlooked in favor of the coast, Central Florida has some amazing hidden gems of which Ginnie Springs is one. The crystal clear turquoise spring waters are a unique and magical site.
In summer months, rent an inner tube and float along the river stopping at the different springs. When the weather cools off, you can still enjoy the beautiful nature by kayaking. The clear spring waters remain a constant 72 degrees year round!
Even more excitement lies below the water’s surface. Certified scuba divers can dive into the underwater caves of the spring. If you are not scuba certified, dive training is offered through local scuba instructors at Ginnie Springs. What a special place to learn to scuba dive!
While Ginnie Springs is family friendly and all ages can enjoy the refreshing waters, spring break and holiday weekends do draw younger crowds from nearby University of Florida who are ready to party. If you’re looking for a peaceful, quiet retreat visiting in winter or during the week may be best.
While the distance from Jacksonville makes Ginnie Springs an easy day trip, if you want to spend more time in the tranquility of nature, Ginnie Springs Outdoors offers both tent camping sites and a cottage. There are also many quaint cottages and cabins available in the area on VRBO.

Vero Beach, FL
3 Hours and 3 Minutes, 213 Miles from Jacksonville
Looking for a family friendly beach vacation with a sprinkle of Disney magic? Drive 3 hours (207 miles) south of Jacksonville, Florida, and you’ll find yourself at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort for a weekend getaway from Jacksonville. The resort is right on Florida’s Treasure Coast. And as a resort guest, you will be able to access the beach through a private entrance without ever stepping foot off the property.
If you’d rather hang by the pool, you can enjoy a huge, two-story waterslide, whirlpool spa, and poolside bar. There’s even a pirate-themed splash pad area for little ones. There are more activities to do at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort than you can count. From beach and water rentals to kids’ activities to sports, check out Eb & Flo’s Rentals once you get to the resort to see all that’s offered. Whatever you enjoy, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is worth the visit.
If you visit the resort from late spring through fall, you’ll be there during sea turtle nesting season. Disney has a conservation team that offers informational sessions on the sea turtle habitat, and you may even get to see a sea turtle nest or hatchling!
Since the resort only has a couple restaurants, you might want to venture off property for a bite to eat. Head over to Casey’s Place in Vero Beach for a classic window-service restaurant that serves burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, and salads. You can enjoy your meal on the covered outdoor patio or take it to go. Then end the night by sipping a cocktail at the Green Cabin Room back at the resort. Don’t miss out on Vero Beach as one of the great weekend getaways from Jacksonville, FL.

Saint Augustine, FL
46 Minutes, 40 Miles from Jacksonville
Looking for some weekend getaways from Jacksonville, FL that offer tons of history? St. Augustine, FL is a short 45-minute drive from Jacksonville, FL, and is the perfect weekend getaway for families, couples, history buffs, and nature lovers alike. First explored by the Spanish conquistador, Ponce de Leon, the Spanish colony was formed in 1565. This makes St. Augustine the oldest European city in the United States.
The Spanish fort of Castillo de San Marcos is a must-see attraction in St. Augustine. This national monument is built of a special shell masonry called coquina and has withstood attacks for more than 400 years. As you explore the fort, be sure to talk to the park rangers dressed in period costumes for a living history experience. There are weekend Historic Weapons Demonstrations, and children can join the Jr. Ranger Program.
For even more history, visit the Ponce de Leon Fountain of Youth. This is a working archeological site where you can taste the fountain’s spring water and see if you can turn back time. Adults can admire the Spanish Renaissance architecture of Flagler College, while children will want to climb aboard at the Pirate and Treasure Museum.
For a wild nature experience, head over to the Alligator Farm and Zoological Park. Experience Florida’s state reptiles up close and learn about many other species of birds and exotic animals.
Fresh seafood and a great view of the ocean is what Sunset Grille has to offer for lunch and dinner. The second-floor al fresco dining is a perfect place for a relaxed weekend meal with drinks.
Right on the ocean is the Guy Harvey Resort. With beach access, a pool, and dining on-site, this is a great place to unwind after a fun-filled day of exploring St. Augustine.

Crystal River, FL
2 Hours and 23 Minutes, 135 Miles from Jacksonville
One of the most unique things to do in Florida is meeting the manatees in Crystal River, FL. This makes one of the most perfect weekend getaways from Jacksonville, FL as it is only a little over 2 hours away. (It’s also a great day trip from Tampa, FL!) It’s a great place for kids and adults alike, and is especially fun places to visit with guests in town. Show off one of the hidden gems in the state!
Crystal River is home to many natural springs located just off the Gulf of Mexico. These springs keep the water a constant 72 degrees. This means that the water is perfect for the hoards of manatees that call this place home each winter.
Visiting in winter is the best time, as you’ll see hundreds of these huge, gentle animals. They are so calm as they float around the water, even with all of the people around! So, book a tour, or rent a kayak or book a dive tour from Crystal River Kayak Company and Dive Center. They’re located right on the water so it is the most convenient spot to rent from. Hop in the water and enjoy a few hours with these sweet animals.
Visiting the rest of the year is still so much fun. The water is super refreshing to swim in during Florida’s hot summer months. So, hop out of your kayak onto the rocks and have fun splashing into the water. The main spring is called Three Sisters Springs and you can access that while most of the manatees are on vacation, from April 1st to November 14th. You can also paddle around and find some other springs and islands with private beaches to enjoy as well! If you look hard, you can still spot a few manatees in the Spring, Summer and Fall.
Not a fan of getting in the water? That’s okay! Make a visit to the Three Sisters Springs Center to explore the boardwalks surrounding the springs. The area is fun to explore all throughout the year, but this spot is definitely best in the winter when you can see the manatees.
Spend the night at Plantation on Crystal River which offers gorgeous grounds and a large resort style pool.

Cedar Key, Florida
2 Hours 23 Minutes, 130 Miles from Jacksonville
Cedar Key is Florida’s second oldest town, but it’s not as well known as Florida’s other beach towns. This makes it the perfect place to visit for anyone looking to get away from big-city life and instead spend a weekend in a relaxing place without crowds of tourists.
This historic town lies 130 miles southwest of Jacksonville on Florida’s Gulf Coast and can be reached by car in approximately two and a half hours. Dock Street is the main activity hub for Cedar Key, so you’ll want to park somewhere nearby, and then go on-foot from there. This road is short and easy to walk in just ten minutes.
On one end of Dock Street, you’ll find Cedar Key Beach. It’s a small beach, but there are kayaks to rent if you’d like to paddle across the ocean to one of the other nearby islands.
Atsena Otie is just a half mile away and was once the original settlement for Cedar Key before a hurricane destroyed it in 1896. Today it’s a popular place for tourists to explore the old ruins and visit the historic cemetery located in the island’s center.
On the opposite end of Dock Street, the Cedar Key Fishing Pier provides one of the best spots in town to photograph the entire street, including all the shops and restaurants that are built directly over the water.
When you get hungry, there are multiple restaurants to choose from, and each of them has an outdoor patio overlooking the ocean. The Tipsy Cow is an excellent choice for burgers and seafood options! They even have a separate Doggie Menu so that you can bring your furry friend to eat beside you on the patio!
For a unique place to stay during your weekend getaways from Jacksonville, FL, pick the Island Hotel! Constructed in 1859, it’s one of the oldest hotels in Florida and is even said to be haunted!
