Romantic Getaways in the US – North
1. Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts
Recommended by Maria of Martha’s Vineyard Travel Tips
Edgartown, a charming coastal village on Martha’s Vineyard is perfect for romantic getaways in the US. You don’t need a car if you stay in town. But if you want to explore the island, rent a car and bring it on the ferry with you.
Edgartown has a picturesque harbor and walkable streets lined with historic homes, and boutique stores. Check out the iconic pieces at CB Stark Jewelers if you’re looking for an engagement ring or anniversary gift.
A Martha’s Vineyard sunset is truly a sight to behold. But finding a secluded spot to enjoy it can be difficult. A private sunset cruise is a great choice. Snack on local artisanal charcuterie and enjoy a bottle of wine while watching the sun go down over the ocean.
I love to take a walk to Edgartown lighthouse and beach for a stunning backdrop for dreamy photos. (I had my engagement pictures taken here!) Book a photographer to capture the memories of your idyllic getaway.
Dinner at Detente is a must-do for your trip. The menu is modern American with a European influence and the food is freshly sourced from local farmers and fisherman. The intimate seating and atmospheric outdoor courtyard makes this my top pick for a romantic meal on Martha’s Vineyard.
Where to Stay: A romantic place to stay in Edgartown is The Christopher. It’s a classic New England B&B inside a historic Victorian building. It has just 15 rooms and a courtyard with a firepit and cozy blankets for snuggling in the cool evening air.
When to Visit: Summer is perfect because the weather is warm and the coastal air feels wonderful!

Romantic Getaways in the US – South
2. Charleston, South Carolina
Recommended by Mayra of Life on the Roam
Walking under the Spanish Moss hanging from the magnificent oak trees in the parks of Charleston inspired me to nominate this historic city as a romantic getaway in the US.
The Charleston International Airport is the nearest airport, 10 miles away from the Historic District. Once you’re in the city center, the best way to explore Charleston is by foot.
Stroll leafy parks dotted with fountains and monuments, such as the Joe Riley Waterfront Park and White Point Garden. Both have access to a footpath along the river where you’ll spot birds and dolphins while enjoying scenic views.
For a date night, watch a play at the Historic Dock Street Theatre. And have dinner at one of the many nearby restaurants.
To spend a day in a romantic-style garden in Charleston head to the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. It’s located 30 minutes from the city center by car.
This was one of the most romantic getaway activities that I visited in Charleston. There’s miles of nature trails that traverse lush gardens. My favorite views were the ponds showing the reflection of mature oak trees and wood bridges, offering a magical setting for pictures with your loved one.
Where to Stay: The gorgeous antebellum mansions in the South of Broad area are a testament of the rich past of this port city. Many are now boutique hotels, such as 20 South Battery, dating back to 1843 and just steps from the waterfront. You can stay in this historic house and relax in the private gardens and porches.
When to Visit: Spring is best because all of the flowers are in bloom and the weather is mild. However, Charleston also makes for a wonderful romantic Christmas getaway as well!
Closest Major Airport: Charleston International Airport

Asheville is a beautiful mountain town nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and along the famous Blue Ridge Parkway. No matter what season you come, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful colors. In the fall you’ll have changing leaves and or wildflowers in the Spring. And the relaxed vibe makes it a serene location for couples who want romance while still having a lot to do and see together. It’s one of the best romantic getaways in the US!
The nearest international airport to Asheville is in Charlotte, 2 hours away so having a car is a must. It will also help you get out of the city to do other things. Such as explore Pisgah National Park or visit a brewery or winery in the area.
Want more great travel articles? I have many more blog posts coming soon, so join my email list to ensure you never miss a post!
However, there are a few other ways to get from Charlotte to Asheville if you do not want to rent a car!
One of the main attractions in Asheville is the Biltmore. The gardens are a beautiful and romantic place to stroll hand in hand. The city also has an amazing food scene for date nights. We loved the Eating Asheville food tour!
Where to Stay: The best place to stay for a little romance is Applewood Manor Bed and Breakfast – the fresh-baked cookies and breakfast are not to be missed!
When to Visit: Fall is perfect in Asheville, it’s not too cold, the leaves are changing color and you can cuddle up in front of the fire with your love.

Best known for its history and the iconic Alamo, San Antonio is a beautiful destination for couples looking for a romantic getaway in America.
Located in Texas, this city creates a romantic ambiance with attractions such as the famed River Walk. Sometimes referred to as “the American Venice,” this network of walkways follows all along the San Antonio River, framed by quaint restaurants and shops.
On any San Antonio itinerary, take a riverboat tour or a leisurely stroll along the riverbanks. Making sure to stop at the artsy block of La Villita and the historic downtown area. I was lucky and even caught a riverside dance performance under the twinkling winter holiday lights and decor.
San Antonio is served by the San Antonio International Airport, making it easily accessible from anywhere in the world. While having a car can be convenient for exploring areas outside the city, it isn’t necessary if you plan to stay in the city center. Public transportation options like buses and river taxis are available, and many attractions are within walking distance.
Where to Stay: After a day of quality time and conversation, unwind at one of the convenient riverwalk hotels with a view, such as the Hotel Contessa.

Couples seeking a romantic escape to the city will find plenty to do in Savannah — from sunset strolls through the Historic District to photo shoots by the love locks bridge to delicious dinners at award-winning restaurants.
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Savannah ghost tours rank as one of the most popular activities for couples. After all, Savannah is known for being one of the most haunted cities in the South! There’s just something about strolling through the city’s dimly lit cobblestone streets at night that makes you want to hug your partner a little tighter!
For a romantic meal, try requesting a seat in the basement tavern of The Olde Pink House. Or head to the city’s most classic date-night spot, Elizabeth’s on 37th. For anyone hoping to propose in Savannah, the fountain at Forsyth Park is the most popular place to pop the question.
The city of Savannah is easy to get to for a romantic getaway in the USA. It is located about 25 minutes from the SAV/HHI International Airport. And approximately the same distance from I-95 for those traveling by car. Make note that cars aren’t necessary in the city, though. Since the Historic District, Victorian District, and Starland District are all very walkable. There’s free public transportation, too, via the DOT shuttle, DownTowner vehicles, and the ferry.

9. San Luis Obispo, California
Recommended by Jess of Travel + Tannins
San Luis Obispo is a gorgeous town located on the central coast of California. San Luis Obispo is one of those towns with access to everything you could imagine for a romantic getaway in America.
There is a bustling wine scene in Edna Valley with access to many incredible wineries. There’s panoramic views from hikes such as Bishop’s Peak and relaxing beaches such as Avila Beach. There’s even romantic hot springs at Sycamore Hot Springs.
I have experienced the hot springs with my partner before and I cannot recommend this enough. There are small, private hot springs that you can book for you and your partner scattered on a hillside. It was so relaxing!
San Luis Obispo is located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, approximately a 3 hour drive from each. There is an airport in San Luis Obispo. But this airport only has departing and arriving flights from regional airports nearby. The best way to get around San Luis Obispo is with a car. But there are plenty of Ubers to utilize if you don’t have your own car!
Where to Stay: Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa, an incredibly romantic hotel and spa!
When to Visit: Winter, the weather is mild here in the winter, the crowds die down, and the slightly cooler temperatures will make the hot springs just that much more wonderful!

10. Sedona, Arizona
Recommended by Emily of The Mandagies
One of the most romantic places to visit is the quiet desert escape of Sedona, Arizona! The gorgeous red rock scenery and culture of restorative healing is the perfect combination for a relationship reset!
Getting to sedona for a romantic getaway is pretty inexpensive and straightforward. Visitors generally fly into Phoenix International Airport. Then rent a car and take the two-hour drive north to the Coconino National Forest.
One of the most iconic things to do in Sedona is hiking! Planning a sunset hike with your partner is a great way to connect. Cathedral Rock, Devil’s Bridge, and Airport Vortex are all great choices.
You can also go to get your auras read together. Sedona is known for its spiritual practices, and crystals, aura readings, and yoga are very common all throughout town. My husband and I went to get our auras read on our last trip in Sedona, and it was a really fun talking point to discuss the rest of the day!
Another cool activity is taking a day trip to Antelope Canyon from Sedona. It’s a bit of a drive, but totally worth it for the amazing views and photos you’ll get.
Overall, Sedona is a relaxing, restorative place for couples!
Where to Stay: For a romantic stay, book 3 days in Sedona at the Wilde Resort and Spa. It’s a great place to indulge in a little bit of luxury without breaking the bank.
When to Visit: Fall is great in Sedona because the highs are usually in the 70s with lots of sunshine!

Rolling lush verdant hills as far as you can see, vast vineyards with grapes laden on the vines, boutique luxury properties scattered across, fresh local produce to tickle your senses, the best spa treatments, what can be more romantic than a getaway at one of the wineries across Napa, Sonoma or Calistoga?
Napa Valley is just an hour’s drive from San Francisco. We rented a car in SF and drove down savoring the pretty landscape. Napa makes for a perfect day trip!
There is a lot to do in Napa Valley during a romantic getaway in the US. Of course, enjoying wine at one of the large chateaus or a smaller wine estate is one of the best experiences. Carmel, officially Carmel-By-The-Sea, is probably one of the most romantic places in all of California. It has everything you could dream of for a romantic getaway in the USA – a gorgeous beach with perfectly soft white sand, charming fairytale cottages, picturesque gardens, and some of northern California’s best dining experiences.
Carmel is a town of just one square mile with quaint streets alongside the majestic homes overlooking the ocean. While it is known for being a popular destination of the rich and famous, Carmel actually has a relaxed beachtown feel that makes it a very casual place to visit.
Arrive in Carmel by driving on the stunning coastal Highway 1, park your car, and then don’t get in it again until it’s time to leave! Carmel is a totally walkable town with easy access to the beach and all the shops and restaurants.
You’ll want to spend a lot of time relaxing and walking on the beach. Be sure to also explore the famous Comstock Fairytale cottages with a self-guided map, available just about everywhere, and learn the history of how that architectural style became part of Carmel’s culture. Don’t miss out on the art galleries and shopping as you stroll on Ocean Ave. You can also walk to the National Historic Landmark Carmel Mission Basilica.
When you do get back in your car, then take a drive on the 17 Mile Drive through Pebble Beach or drive south a few miles to the beautiful Point Lobos Natural Preserve.
One of our favorite things to do in Carmel, after a day on the beach, is to enjoy cocktails and appetizers by the fire pit at The Forge and The Forest or to dine at Clint Eastwood’s Mission Ranch Restaurant overlooking the bluff.
Carmel has been our go-to romantic couple’s getaway for decades and it never disappoints!
Where to Stay: If you are looking for a romantic place to stay with ocean views, your best bet is La Playa Carmel. It is steps front the beach, has gorgeous gardens, a swimming pool, and a champagne brunch that is unbelievable!
When to Visit: Summer would be the best time to visit to take full advantage of the beach and coastal spots!

Poipu, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, is known for its romantic resorts and secluded beaches, making it an ideal destination for couples looking for a romantic getaway within the USA. The island’s stunning natural beauty and warm tropical climate create the perfect setting for a relaxing and intimate vacation.
To get to Kauai, you can fly into the Lihue Airport and then take a short 30-minute drive to Poipu. We recommend renting a car to explore the island and its many attractions.
One of the top activities in Poipu is relaxing at the world-famous Poipu Beach, which offers perfect blue waters, golden sand, and breathtaking sunsets. The beach is not only famous for its picturesque views but also for its friendly local inhabitants – the Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles. As these gentle animals bask on the shore, visitors are given an extraordinary opportunity to witness them in their natural habitat.

The Auli’i Luau at the Sheraton Kauai Resort is one of the best luaus in Kauai, featuring traditional Hawaiian cuisine, cultural activities, and a spectacular fire-knife dance show. This is one of our favorite activities in Kauai, and we would surely do it again.
Where to Stay: When it comes to accommodations, Poipu offers a range of romantic options. We recommend the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, known for its luxurious amenities and beautiful ocean views.

16. Santa Fe, New Mexico
Recommended by Denise of Chef Denise
Santa Fe, New Mexico is hands down one of the most romantic places to visit in the United States. As the oldest US capital city this town is steeped in history. While that may not sound romantic, it’s why the city’s adobe architecture is so unique. You’ll feel like you’ve traveled to another country, and that definitely spells romance.
Since you won’t need a car in downtown Santa Fe, consider taking a shuttle or taxi from the local airport. The plaza is the heart of the old town. Here you’ll find art galleries, boutiques, and some of the best restaurants in Santa Fe.
For a special dinner try Sazón, headed by the James Beard Award winning chef, Fernando Olea. Santa Fe is a great place to visit for foodies. In addition to New Mexican foods, Santa Fe boasts both a margarita trail and a chocolate trail. Just follow the map from the tourist office and sip and snack your way through town.
Art lovers should not miss the Canyon Road district where local artists display and sell their works. There are also a number of notable art museums, the Georgia O’Keefe being the top highlight.
Where to Stay: Stay at La Fonda on the Plaza, and you’ll be able to walk to most of the attractions. The historic hotel is a great place to stay for couples and offers spa amenities as well as a wonderful restaurant.
When to Visit: Spring is beautiful in Santa Fe, the weather is perfect and the summer tourists haven’t gotten here yet!

One of the top things to do in Half Moon Bay with your special someone is to walk or bike along the California Coastal Trail. Park City is one of the most romantic cities in the US. Nestled on the backside of the Wasatch Mountain Range, with its world-class ski resorts, Park City is a town worth visiting.
Getting to Park City is actually really easy. Salt Lake City International Airport is only a short 45-minute drive. This is perfect if you are looking for a quick getaway to a luxurious location.

19. Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii
Recommended by Annie of Your Friend the Nomad
For couples looking for an adventurous, romantic escape, Kailua, Oahu is an easy choice. This town on the lush windward side of Oahu is home to picturesque beaches, incredible hikes, and a small downtown area with cute shops, local breweries, and a variety of restaurants. It is just 30 minutes from Honolulu and can be explored on foot, though a car rental makes it easier.
Even after visiting many other places in Hawaii, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe, our one week Kailua vacation was mine and my husband’s all-time favorite trip. It was the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation, with plenty of time lounging at the beach, and tons of unforgettable moments like freediving with sharks on the North Shore and exploring sea caves on the island’s leeward side.
The best thing to do in Kailua is to head to Lanikai Beach, which is widely considered to be the most beautiful beach on Oahu. This pristine beach has golden sand, turquoise blue water, a vibrant coral reef just steps from the shore, and an iconic view of two uninhabited islands.
Kayaking to the islands off of Kailua is also another fun thing to do in Kailua with your partner, as is hiking the Lanikai Pillbox Trail. The trail is best hiked at sunrise, when you can watch the sky explode in color over the Pacific Ocean and the twin islands.
Where to Stay: Kailua is such a charming place to stay, and the perfect base for exploring Oahu as a couple. However, accommodations are very limited. Papaya Paradise Bed & Breakfast is one of the best places to stay, with a beautiful private pool just a few moments from the beach and downtown Kailua. It’s the ideal destination for a romantic trip in the USA.
When to Visit: Oahu is lovely year round, but Winter is perfect because the weather is warm and it’s also Whale season. I recommend visiting Oahu in February.
Closest Major Airport: Daniel K. Inouye International Airport
20. Willamette Valley, Oregon
Recommended by Jess of Uprooted Traveler
The Willamette Valley in central Oregon offers rolling green hills, pine tree forests, and some of the best wineries in the United States. Oregon is actually the fourth largest wine producer in the country, with two-thirds of that wine coming from the Willamette Valley. This scenery and delicious wine makes it an obvious choice for great romantic getaways in the USA.
The best way to get to the Valley is to fly into Portland and drive a little over an hour south. You’ll definitely need a car to get around to the various wineries and explore the gorgeous surroundings.
The best thing to do here is to, of course, explore the cozy wineries in the area. For example, head to White Rose Estate, which produces an excellent Pinot noir, the varietal the Willamette Valley is famous for. To kick up the romance a notch, consider booking a hot air balloon ride over the Valley- on a clear day, you can see 10 mountain peaks in the air!
Alternatively, you can explore the beautiful landscape around the Valley. For example, wake up to watch sunrise together at McCredie Hot Springs, a natural geothermal pool that’s surrounded by a lush forest. My husband and I did this and had the springs to ourselves for an hour!
Where to Stay: Book a stay at Youngberg Hill, a charming bed and breakfast that whips up delicious two-course breakfasts from local ingredients and has rooms with romantic features, like jacuzzis and fireplaces.
When to Visit: Fall is harvest season in the Valley and is a great time to visit!
