Our last day in Italy we spent traveling back to Rome from Positano. Continue reading my Italy Travel Journal Day 11 to hear about the day’s adventures!
Last Morning in Positano
Wow, what a day. I mean I did not expect today to be glamorous or exciting or anything since it was just a long travel day and getting ready to leave tomorrow but it sure was interesting! We woke up and packed up everything, with all of the goodies we bought the last two days we had some work to do. We had brought a small extra Vera Bradley duffel bag in our suitcase and used that to fit the extra things we bought.
We then wandered down to the town, and ordered a huge case of limoncello to be shipped home, unfortunately they didn’t tell us how much shipping costs because you pay it once you arrive.
We grabbed a cappuccino and croissant and sat on the beach enjoying our last few moments of Positano. We watched the boats come and go and some puppies play in the sand. It was relaxing and bittersweet. As we were about to head to the room we realized we hadn’t heard from our driver yet who was picking us up to bring us to Naples.
I called Joe Banana Limos and they said they didn’t have us booked for today. Naturally, I panicked, scrolled through my email and documents and realized I didn’t have a confirmation either. I totally screwed up!! Austin is convinced I did it intentionally so that we didn’t have to leave…
We were so lucky that the owner was so kind and he said not to worry he would find someone to get us. We hiked back up to the room, grabbed our bags and headed to the street to meet our driver. It was quite a tough walk up and down stairs with our insanely heavy bags but we made it. The driver was 45 minutes later than we originally planned, but that’s obviously our fault, not theirs! But we were panicking, we had a train to catch!
Train to Rome
Miraculously we made it to the station in Naples with 15 minutes to spare!! If you are visiting the Amalfi Coast, book Joe Banana Limos now for your transportation, they will not let you down!!! We got on the train and headed to Rome. We had purchased some meats and focaccia at a market in Positano to have for lunch on the go and it was perfect, the best idea and exactly what we needed.
Our Stay at the Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel
We made it to Rome, jumped in a cab and got to our hotel for the night, the Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel, another Marriott hotel. We were chatting with the guy as he checked us in and found out he’s a huge American football fan!
Austin works for the Tennessee Titans so naturally they hit it off and were going on and on about football. (Which if you don’t know it’s super uncommon to find an Italian who likes American football, at least in our experience). Anyways, once he finally handed us our keys he said “I managed to get you my favorite room in the house, I hope you brought your sunscreen.”
Y’all, it was the best treat after the day we had, this room is insane and has a huge private rooftop terrace! We are two lucky ducks and so grateful for this treat. Naturally we wanted to eat dinner on our terrace so we picked up dinner and brought it to the room. Don’t be mad at me for saying this, but we’re finally SO sick of Italian food. Apparently it takes ten straight days of pizza and pasta to want some veggies in your life. (and yes I know there is more to Italian food than pizza and pasta, but come on, that’s the best part!)
American Food in Rome
I had heard of a place called Ginger, and turns out it was right next to our hotel. Friends, it was amazing! Perfect fresh option for when you are pasta-d out. Austin had a burger with potatoes, I had a veggie quinoa bowl and we shared an acai bowl as a sweet treat.
We chilled out in our room the rest of the night and are going to bed early for a good last night’s sleep in Italy.
Early Morning Photos in Rome
The next morning, I got up around 6am and headed out to get some photos without all of the crowds. I made it to the Pantheon around 6:30am and there were only a few delivery men getting ready for the day. I had the whole piazza to myself. So as I do best, I setup my tripod, and gave my best twirl to get some magical photos with my favorite building to myself.
Just a 5-10 minute walk away is the Trevi Fountain. When we were in Rome last week, I never even bothered to stop and take a photo since there were so many people you can’t even move. I knew I would get up early this morning and make it happen, and I am so glad I did. You must do this too when you are in Rome, you will not regret it. I lived out all of my Lizzie McGuire dreams.
We then left for the airport and arrived with about 3 hours to spare. Honestly, we are so glad we got there as early as we did! It took about 2 hours to get through everything, and they board the big planes 45 minutes before departure. Basically we only had a few minutes to spare before it was time to board!
We will miss this incredible country, its people and its food so much. But we know we will be back. I have dreamed of this place for so many years and now my husband understands why. We both love it here. You cannot go wrong with which places you visit, but I do have a ton of tips on how to make the absolute best of your stay.
